CAREER HIGHLIGHTS:  Miriam Raftery is an award-winning photojournalist with over twenty years of professional writing and editing experience.  Thousands of her articles have been published in national magazines, newspapers, websites and international trade journals including Woman’s Day, Home Magazine, Arizona Highways,, Women’s E-News, RawStory.com, Ranch & Coast, Décor & Style, Living In Style, Writer’s Digest, Friendly Exchange,  San Diego Home/Garden, Ranch & Coast, Nutrition Business Journal, Environmental Business Journal, California Real Estate Journal, San Diego Union-Tribune, East County Californian, CityBeat and San Diego Writers’ Monthly.  Syndicated articles have sold through Copley Press and Gannett News Service.   Her photographs have appeared in numerous publications ranging from Arizona Highways to tourism brochures and catalogs. 

Currently a senior national writer for RawStory.com,  she has broken many major national political stories including ethical and corruption issues involving senior members of Congress and the administration.   A national expert on electronic voting issues, her network of sources includes whistleblowers inside Diebold and the National Whistleblowers Coalition.   

She also serves as Contributing Editor for the Nutrition Business Journal.  A national expert on the nutrition industry, she has developed an international network of sources including medical experts, governmental authorities, academic leaders, scientists, analysts, and senior executives at many of the world’s largest food, pharmaceutical, and nutritional supplement companies.

A former newspaper columnist and literary magazine editor, Ms. Raftery’s background reflects a diverse career including positions as a business and real estate correspondent, design/remodeling writer, national corporate marketing director, and media liaison for a state senator. 

She has earned a reputation as one of Southern California’s most experienced residential design and remodeling writers, covering major design events for area home/garden magazines including Décor & Style and Living in Style.  She has written hundreds of home-related articles and penned the popular “Small Change” remodeling column for the San Diego Union-Tribune for nearly a decade.  Her works also appear regularly in the East County Californian, where she covers local politics.  In addition, she is publisher of Liberty Belle Log, a political newsletter. 

Ms. Raftery received critical acclaim for her nonfiction book, 100 Books That Shaped World History, and for her novel, Apollo’s Fault.   In addition, she has served as a ghostwriter on travel guides and as a collaborator on High Voltage Success, a motivational business book by a prominent corporate leader.   

Former nonfiction editor of  San Diego Writers’ Monthly, a literary magazine, Ms. Raftery has taught courses in journalism, fiction-writing, and photography through the San Diego Writing Center,  Learning Annex,  and community groups.  She has addressed professional associations, including Romance Writers of America and the San Diego Writers & Editors Guild, and been a talk show guest on KLSD Radio.  She has won numerous awards for her work from national, state and local writing organizations including San Diego Press Club, California Press Women, National Federation of Press Women, San Diego Book Awards, Romance Writers of America, and the International Raymond Chandler Writing Competition.

Ms. Raftery holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in environmental studies from the University of California, Santa Barbara.  Her professional memberships include the American Society of Journalists & Authors (ASJA),  National Writers Union (NWU), Author’s Guild, and the San Diego Writers & Editors Guild.   Also an active community volunteer, she serves as Media Watch Chair of San Diego for Democracy and Media Coordinator for Democracy Fest 2006.
